Archbishops of Munich and Freising

Joseph Ratzinger was appointed Archbishop of Munich and Freising by Pope Paul VI. Thus after a lapse of 80 years, a native Bavarian and diocese priest was once again named Archbishop Metropolitan of Munich.

The Archbishop selected as his motto "Cooperatores veritatis“ (cooperators of the truth) from 3John 8. Already on June 27, 1977 he was elevated to Cardinal by Pope Paul VI. In the following years numerous official functions and responsibilities relating to church service often brought the new Archbishop to Freising where he ordained priests in June and celebrated the Feast of St. Corbinian in November.

He also frequently visited the former diocese in his function as chairman of the Bishops Conference which was held regularly in Freising. And it was he who promoted raising Freising Cathedral to a concathedral of the Archdiocese of Munich and Freising.
