Cardinal of the Curia - Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith
On November 25, 1981 Cardinal Ratzinger became Prefect for the Congregation of the Doctrine of the Faith. In February 1982 he bid farewell to his archdiocese.

In 1992 he rose to Cardinal Bishop in the order of Cardinal Bishops within the College of Cardinals and in 2002 was elected Dean of the College of Cardinals. On April 19, 2005 Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger was elected Pope as successor to Pope John Paul II who died on April 2, 2005.
